3-Low-power Technology for LCDs

Adaptive 1D Dimming Technique For Low Power System

In the mobile systems, the mobility is the most important issue. Thus, the battery life is the most important. Dimming technique can reduce power consumption and provide the long battery life. If the dimming technique is applied to the mobile systems, the mobile systems consume lower power. And we can get a long battery life while maintaining high performance.

0D dimming technology dims LEDs depending on the entire image, power consumption cannot be reduced fully. But 1D dimming technology dim LEDs depending on only parts of image. Thus, it can reduce more power consumption.

The backlight profile of a side-lit LED throughout the LCD screen can be measured. We approximated the profile by using a simple polynomial expression to make a hardware implementation easy. We divided the LEDs into 8 blocks.

We modified a conventional 12.1" XGA panel to have a side-lit LED backlight. We divided the LEDs into 8 blocks and each block had 3 LEDs. The above figure shows photo of 1D dimmed backlight profile and final image after pixel compensation.

Dimming technology can reduce more power. Thus we can have much longer battery life and use high performed mobile devices with high mobility at out of the office. Our proposed method can enhance the image quality, dynamic contrast by considering the light profile over the screen.
